Expanded Core Curriculum

The term Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) is used to define concepts and skills that require specialised instruction with students who are blind or visually impaired in order to compensate for decreased opportunities to learn incidentally by observing others.

Expanded Core Curriculum Collage

Learning and practising these skills enables learners to live as independently as possible in their communities, and participate and contribute to those communities.

It has been evidenced that without these skills students with a visual impairment can find it impossible to learn the Core Curriculum subjects such as Maths, English and Science.

Some learners may not need to cover all aspects of the ECC. For example, if a student has good visual acuity some skills may not be relevant such as Braille and some skills may only be relevant if a student has no vision. Each child is assessed on their individual needs.

At NCW we plan these skills lessons within the timetable.

The skills taught at NCW are:

  • Independent Living Skills
  • Braille
  • Mobility
  • IT and the use of Assistive Technology
  • Careers Education
  • Social Interaction
