150th Anniversary Oral History Project

As part of the 150th Anniversary of New College Worcester, a group of students recorded the memories and experiences of former pupils and staff to find out what it was really like at their school in the past.

Carys, Sarah, Ali, Naqib, Elle, Bridget, Matthew, Beth, Ada and Sean interviewed a wide variety of people from both Worcester College, which catered for blind and partially sighted boys and Chorleywood College, which did the same for girls. The two came together in 1987 to create the current College.

It has been fascinating for the students to discover what it was like to be a blind student in previous decades. The students were amazed and horrified at some of the things the pupils got up to and fascinated by their insights into everything from technology to school food.

Extracts from the interviews can be found here:

Oral History Extract of Adrian Magill interviewed by Sarah and Beth

Oral History of Ian Fell interviewed by Sarah and Ali

Oral History Extract of Lyndall Bywater interviewed by Sarah and Naqib

Oral History Extract of Susan Potter interviewed by Sarah and Elle

The recordings of the interviews have been deposited at the Hive Library in Worcester and have also been used to create a CD of the highlights. The CD features just a snapshot of college life over the last 80 years as remembered by a handful of the hundreds of students who have come here.

The College also has a mobile listening station, which can be set up at your school, organisation or workplace - please contact us for more information.

Listening station

For a copy of the CD or to find out about borrowing the listening station please contact the College on 01905 763933 or Email. There is a recommended donation of £5.
