On Wednesday 6 February, HRH The Princess Royal paid a visit to New College Worcester to celebrate the work of our overseas Lattitude volunteers.

With the sound of a helicopter getting nearer, it was with great anticipation that students, staff, volunteers and an invited party of special visitors gathered to welcome HRH The Princess Royal - also Royal Patron of Lattitude Global Volunteering.

Following introductions, Her Royal Highness received a tour of the Sixth Form Residential House and met students and volunteers in the kitchen area, who were busy showing off their cooking skills!

The party then moved on to Fit4Purpose Multi-Gym, where students such as Ryley and Stanley worked on the equipment whilst Chelsea and Charlotte practised their Goalball talents.

Mrs Price, Head of PE, delighted: “It was great to see the interest Her Royal Highness showed in the students and training they do for specific sports. She seemed amazed at the distances the students had to travel when training at national level, and at the thought of competing without sight.

The Multi-Gym is staffed by our Lattitude volunteers, allowing students greater opportunity to use the facilities”.

A group of students and volunteers waited patiently in the Youth Club to talk to HRH The Princess Royal about the various activities they get involved in after school hours. Her Royal Highness seemed to pay particular interest to the Wii!

Next it was a visit to Independent Living Skills, where students were making a meal of their choice. Ebenezer cooked a sausage sandwich, whilst Ilja chose a chicken, bacon and sweetcorn baked potato filling and Sydney showcased her skills making a chicken and bacon pasta bake!

Her Royal Highness was then lead to Modern Foreign Languages and Mathematics, where students and volunteers demonstrated French, German and Spanish, and different Braille techniques for calculations.

Arriving in the Learning Resource Centre, Princess Anne met with many special guests comprising of Lattitude Volunteers, staff, Placement Hosts and the Senior Student Team.

Upon meeting Her Royal Highness, current Head Girl, Amber, described: “I was nervous, but it was a lovely experience and a great day! Princess Anne took the time to speak to many of us”.

Sixth Form students Sean, Carys and Grace then provided a beautiful musical performance in the Chapel, in which The Princess Royal appeared to enjoy! She was then invited to present Lattitude awards to volunteers and staff, and unveil a commemorative plaque to mark the special day.

To conclude the visit, student and RDA Show Jumping champion Carys presented a small gift to Her Royal Highness, in which she received very gratefully.

With the celebratory day coming to an end, students, volunteers and staff gathered outside to wave goodbye as HRH The Princess Royal flew off over Worcestershire to her next appointment!
