News > Fantastic Fun in France

It was dark and early on a January Saturday, 4.30am to be exact, when nine students and five staff collected themselves together at NCW, ready for the minibus journey to Birmingham Airport. We were to fly to Chambéry in the Savoie region of France and would then get a minibus transfer to our hotel, the Terra Nova, at La Plagne.

The hotel was excellent, with a well-equipped games room and a pool table. The bedrooms all had televisions and en-suite facilities. Breakfast was a buffet from which you take as much as you wished, and there was a wide variety of delicious food. The evening meals with attended service were likewise great.

During the week all of the students made impressive progress. It was a group of mixed ability, with some students never having skied before. By the end of the week all had gained in confidence.

The students’ instructors were from the Oxygène ski school, and each student kept the same instructor for the week. They were all very friendly and excellent teachers who clearly love their profession. They had a great sense of fun and developed an excellent rapport with all the students.

There can be no better feeling than that experienced high in the mountains on a clear day with excellent snow conditions, gazing at Mont Blanc in the distance, as we did on one wonderful day. However, conditions were not ideal all the time, which gave the students the opportunity to learn how to deal with differing snow conditions.

Group skiing

Here’s what some of the students thought:

Grace: “The best part for me was doing the vertical half-pipe”.

Amy: “I really enjoyed the ski trip; we went with such a good group. The ski instructors were great and really funny. I feel like I learned a lot and I achieved something overall”

Charlie: “I’d never skied before. The instructors were really helpful and by the end of the week, after many tumbles, I was going down blue slopes confidently – it was amazing!"

Elle: “It was a really good trip and my skiing has got a lot better. All the students got a lot closer and learned a lot from each other. The best bit was ALL OF IT!!”

La Plagne is a wonderful area for skiing and all who went on the trip will remember it fondly.
