Students and staff were recently invited to take part in an exciting group discussion with West Midlands Railway on the redevelopment of local train station Worcester Foregate Street.

Students and staff discussing station redevelopment

Worcester Foregate Street has been identified as one of four stations on the West Midlands Train network to receive funding for investment in ticket gates, the remodelling of ticket retailing areas and an enhanced retail experience.

The purpose of the meeting was to engage with students and staff, and to capture accessibility improvements as part of the station project.

Students have regular mobility lessons at NCW during which there is a focus on public transport and as regular train users, they had lots of ideas to put forward as to how the train station experience for people with a visual impairment could improve.

These included the suggestion of closer taxi drop off points and ticket machines with audio assistance.

A LEGO model was constructed and used to show our students and staff the proposed plan for the station, and enable them to navigate their way around.

Other suggestions of the station redevelopment included the possibility of different floor textures to identify areas, braille on lift buttons and consideration of signage – font, colour and size.

The feedback from the discussion will be fed in to the larger consultation process, and will be fed back to station users once potential options have been produced!
