Purpose of the Job:

To provide a high standard of care to blind and vision impaired students in a proficient and sensitive manner that will enhance their academic and social development.

Main Tasks:

  • To work with other House Staff at the start of the shift to welcome students back, help settle students and check that they are all accounted for.
  • To maintain an environment that allows students to live, sleep and study effectively by ensuring students are not being excessively noisy or boisterous.
  • To ensure students settle well at night and are organised for their early morning routines.
  • Whilst the post-holder is expected to take some initiative, they are also expected to know when to ask for help.
  • To support specific students (eg students with a hearing loss or additional needs) in the event of a fire and during fire evacuation practice.
  • To administer medication to students who require it during the shift, after appropriate training and assessment.
  • To assist individual students with personal and / or intimate care when required.
  • To undertake appropriate administrative tasks to support the students and the work of the Residential staff effectively.
  • To ensure that records are kept in accordance with College requirements and current legislation.
  • To maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to students, staff and the College.
  • To attend Induction sessions, regular supervision sessions and an annual appraisal by the Senior House Parent.
  • To be willing to undertake continued professional development.
  • To attend staff meetings, student reviews and other meetings as requested.
  • To support the student in coming to terms with the effect of vision and other impairments.
  • To liaise with the staff team, parents and academic staff in order to achieve a comprehensive approach to the student’s development.
