NCW Students Take the Lead in School Council

Two NCW students using white canes walk alongside Mr Stephens outside the main NCW building, with its large clock visible above them.

At New College Worcester (NCW), a national specialist school and college for blind and vision impaired young people, student voice is at the heart of school life. This year, students are taking an even greater role in shaping their community with the introduction of a student-led School Council and two new leadership positions.

School Council provides students with an opportunity to share their views, represent their peers and help make positive changes across the school. This year, form representatives were invited to put themselves forward for the newly created roles of Chair and Vice Chair.

We are delighted to announce that Honey has been selected as Chair of the School Council. As Chair, Honey will lead School Council meetings, help set agendas, coordinate student voice activities and work closely with staff to support improvements across the school.

We are also pleased to confirm that Zac has been appointed Vice Chair of the School Council. Zac will support Honey in gathering student feedback, planning agendas, leading meetings and ensuring the views of lower school students are represented.

Congratulations to both Honey and Zac on their appointments. We wish them every success in their new leadership roles and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make throughout the year.

Paul Stephens, Assistant Principal for Personal Development, said:

“Student voice plays a vital role in shaping our school community, and I am delighted to see students taking on these new leadership opportunities. Honey and Zac have both shown enthusiasm for representing their peers, and I look forward to working with them as they help ensure that every student’s voice is heard. Student leadership helps develop confidence, communication and teamwork skills, while also making a positive difference to life at NCW.”

Student Council at NCW

The School Council is made up of representatives from each form, giving students a platform to share ideas and help influence decisions that affect school life.

The council will play an important role in supporting initiatives across the school, including helping to embed the Wellbeing Award and ensuring students’ voices continue to be heard.

As a specialist setting for blind and vision impaired young people, NCW is committed to providing meaningful opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, advocate for themselves and others, and contribute to decisions that affect their education and wellbeing.

By taking on leadership roles and representing their peers, students develop valuable skills in communication, teamwork, organisation and leadership, while helping to make NCW an even better place to learn, live and thrive.

We look forward to another successful year of student leadership and student voice at NCW.
