We’re excited to announce that NCW now has its very own radio studio. The new space gives staff and students an engaging way to communicate, share ideas and build valuable skills.
Radio has long thrived at NCW. Many of our students are keen budding disc jockeys who jump at every chance to get on the airwaves. With the dedicated studio, they now have the perfect platform to grow their talents.
A Project in the Making
The radio project began last summer, when BBC sound engineers visited NCW to meet our aspiring DJs. They offered expert advice on setting up the studio, explained the technical specifications and demonstrated the best ways to make it work. Their guidance shaped this exciting new space.
We are delighted to have this new radio studio at NCW. Radio continues to be a vital medium for people with vision impairments. Surveys show that a significant proportion of blind and partially sighted people rely on radio as a primary source of connection, entertainment and information, because it places listeners on an equal footing with sighted audiences. This makes our new studio not just a fun project, but an important way of engaging with inclusive communication. We have listened to student voice, heard that they wanted a radio and pushed the project forward.

- Leo and Lawson are running the actual radio station alongside Mr Hinds and Miss Elmes.
This hands‑on experience is helping them build confidence, creativity and technical know‑how — all while having fun.
Lawson’s Visit to Vale Talking News for Work Experience
Lawson recently visited Vale Talking News, a bi‑weekly audio magazine for people with vision impairments as part of his work experience. He learned how an edition is recorded, took part in an interview and may even contribute content in the future. Lawson hopes to develop features about his experiences of being blind, his aspirations and what life is like from his perspective.
This marks the beginning of what we hope will be a fantastic collaboration between NCW and Vale Talking News — a valuable resource for VI members of our community.
Looking Ahead
With ideas like Lawson’s Corner, positive aura reports and student‑led features, the NCW radio station is set to become a vibrant hub of creativity and inclusion.
We’re proud to see our students embracing this opportunity and we look forward to sharing more updates (and perhaps a few broadcasts) soon.
