A firm tradition in the NCW calendar is Celebration Day, a special occasion that some former students may remember as Speech Day. It is a day when the entire NCW community comes together to celebrate the achievements of our students, reflect on the year gone by, and bid farewell to those leaving us as they take the next exciting step in their journey.
This year was no exception.
The sun shone brightly throughout the day – as families, former students, friends of the college, supporters, patrons and stakeholders gathered on the college lawn. Guests enjoyed cream teas, tombolas, a Braille table and a range of student-led craft stalls, creating a wonderful atmosphere across the campus as old friends reconnected and new memories were made.
The formal proceedings began with a series of inspiring speeches, including one from former NCW student Jack Garner. Jack shared his journey from NCW to university and into the workplace, reflecting on the many adventures he has embraced along the way. From climbing mountains and completing triathlons to taking on new challenges and opportunities, Jack demonstrated that determination and ambition can take you anywhere. His message to students was clear: if you set your mind to something, anything is possible.
Guests were then treated to the annual Music Showcase, which once again demonstrated the remarkable talent of NCW students. For some performers, this was their final opportunity to take to the NCW stage, making the occasion particularly emotional. The performances were met with enthusiastic applause and served as a fitting celebration of the hard work, commitment and creativity students have shown throughout the year.
Following a delicious lunch, guests had the opportunity to explore the school and visit a variety of subject showcases, highlighting the breadth of learning and opportunities available at NCW. Students proudly demonstrated their work and achievements, giving visitors a valuable insight into life across the college.
The afternoon continued with a powerful and thought-provoking speech from another former NCW student, Darren Harris. Darren is a motivational speaker, entrepreneur and England’s most-capped visually impaired footballer. Sharing stories from his journey from Wolverhampton to competing at the highest levels of sport, Darren encouraged students to challenge their own limitations, embrace opportunities and think differently about what they can achieve. His positivity, resilience and determination left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
Celebration Day also provided an opportunity to recognise the dedication and contribution of NCW staff. During the afternoon, the college paid tribute to Victoria Ward, who is retiring after 26 years of service. A particularly moving moment came when former students shared a specially created film expressing their gratitude for the impact Victoria had on their musical education and lives. The heartfelt messages demonstrated the lasting influence she has had on generations of NCW students throughout her career.
The day concluded with the much-anticipated awards ceremony, recognising students’ achievements, progress and contributions throughout the year. As award winners collected their certificates and prizes, the chapel was filled with applause and pride as families, friends and staff celebrated their successes.
A number of prestigious awards were presented by distinguished guests, including The Hon. Gilbert Greenall, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Mr Graham Smith of The Worshipful Company of Lightmongers, Lord Faulkner of Worcester and Maynard Burton, High Sheriff of Worcestershire.
Among the honours presented was the Lightmongers Award for Sciences, generously supported by The Worshipful Company of Lightmongers and presented by Mr Graham Smith.
Celebration Day 2026 was a wonderful celebration of everything that makes NCW special – community, achievement, resilience and aspiration. Thank you to everyone who attended, supported and helped organise the day. Most importantly, congratulations to all of our students. We are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved and look forward to seeing what the future holds for each and every one of you.
