This half term, our Year 7 students have been busy continuing to getting to know their local area through two fantastic trips that combined sunshine, history and hands-on learning.
A Walk Along the River Severn
The first outing saw students enjoying a sunny walk from Diglis to Worcester Cathedral and back. Along the way, they explored the canal network, learning about its historical importance in trade and transport, and how it continues to be used today. A highlight of the walk was stopping to observe the flood markers, which gave the students a real sense of the power of nature and the river’s history of rising waters.
Ed: “I really liked the sound of the river and the noise of the boats.”
Bella: “The flood markings were really good.”
Stepping into History at The Commandery
The second trip took Year 7 to The Commandery, a key site in the story of the English Civil War. The students are currently learning about the war in class, so this visit brought the history to life! From trying on replica Civil War clothing to exploring weaponry and discovering the building’s many uses over the centuries, there was something to captivate everyone. It was hard to believe that this now central building was once surrounded by countryside outside the city walls.
Ed: “I really enjoyed looking at the cannons.”
Bella: “I enjoyed the paintings on the ceilings and walls.” (referring to the medieval monks’ hospital)
These trips have given our Year 7 students a deeper appreciation for Worcester’s rich history and geography.
