Students George and Lawson recently enjoyed an exclusive behind‑the‑scenes visit to the Mondelez Cadbury factory, exploring the fascinating journey of chocolate from bean to bar. What seemed like a simple sweet treat turned out to be a complex craft involving weeks, months and even years of work, creativity and science.
During the tour, students discovered a whole range of surprising facts about the world of chocolate production:
- Different countries use different chocolate recipes to suit local tastes.
- Cadbury, part of the global company Mondelez International, doesn’t just make chocolate — they also produce Philadelphia cheese, Ritz biscuits and even gummy bears.
- Cocoa butter, a key ingredient in chocolate, is also widely used in skincare products.
- Chocolate is worked on a cold marble surface using two scrapers, a technique that requires skill and precision.
- As chocolate cools, it becomes thicker and harder to move — something students experienced first‑hand.
- Other companies that use Mondelez Cadbury chocolate must request permission and follow strict brand guidelines.
The visit was made extra special thanks to Gareth, Ryan and chocolatier Michael, whose enthusiasm and expert knowledge created an unforgettable learning experience. Many students described it as one of the best days of the year.
A Taste of the Experience
During the workshop, the students explored the raw ingredients behind chocolate making. Pots with red lids held various components — none of which tasted anything like chocolate. One white ingredient in particular was described as “claggy and disgusting,” much to the group’s amusement!
The day continued with hands‑on chocolate tempering, guided by Michael the chocolatier. The students learned how temperature affects viscosity, feeling the chocolate thicken as it cooled while pushing it across the marble surface.
Taste‑testing — naturally — was an essential part of the process. From small samples to a cup of warm melted chocolate, Lawson and George thoroughly embraced the opportunity. Lawson joked: “Can I record all my lessons in chocolate instead of on the laptop?”
Chocolate Creations
Making their own chocolate bar proved both satisfying and surprisingly challenging. Pouring the chocolate into moulds and spreading it evenly required focus, patience and a bit of technique. The students said they would have loved a second attempt to refine their results.
The day was filled with laughter, enthusiasm and a few “caught in the act” moments — particularly for those who embraced the chocolate marathon a little too eagerly!
Leaving Our Mark
From hands‑on learning to delicious taste tests, the visit to Mondelez Cadbury was a memorable experience for everyone involved. Lawson and George left not only with their own handmade chocolate bars, but also with a deeper understanding of the craft, science and creativity that goes into one of Britain’s most iconic treats.
A huge thank you once again to Gareth, Ryan and Michael for welcoming us behind the scenes and giving George and Lawson an inspiring, unforgettable day.
