New College Worcester (NCW) was delighted to welcome the world-famous Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) back to the college for another exciting and much-loved fixture.
Each year, NCW is privileged to host the MCC for a fully accessible visually impaired (VI) cricket match—a long-standing tradition that continues to grow stronger. Many MCC players return year after year, becoming familiar faces within the NCW community and strengthening this special partnership.
The weather was on our side, providing a beautiful day just ahead of the recent heatwave, and setting the perfect scene for a competitive and enjoyable match. MCC posted a total of 74, with NCW narrowly missing out after a brilliant effort, finishing on 65—just 9 runs short.
A highlight of the day was Daniel being awarded the prestigious Chance to Shine cap for his outstanding batting performance.
Students and players also enjoyed a traditional cricket tea afterwards in the dining room—because cricket, of course, deserves fine food!
Mrs Jane Price, Head of PE at NCW, shared her thanks:
“It’s always a highlight of our sporting calendar to welcome the MCC back to NCW. Their visit has become a valued tradition, and we are incredibly grateful for their ongoing support of our students. What stands out year after year is their genuine passion for understanding disability in sport and their commitment to making cricket inclusive for all. Opportunities like this allow our students to develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment of the game in a truly supportive environment.”
Dan Goodyear – MCC Match Manager said:
“MCC were delighted to return to NCW for our annual fixture recently. The MCC plays over 400 matches a year against schools, universities and club teams with the aim of promoting the “Spirit of Cricket” and it is hard to think of one which encapsulates this better than our match against NCW. It showcases that sport can, and should be, accessible for all to enjoy, and brings so many more benefits alongside it developing teamwork, communication and leadership skills, as well as forging long lasting friendships. For all our players, some of whom have become regulars in this fixture over the years, and those experiencing VI cricket for the first time, it is a great opportunity to challenge our skills in very different ways to what we are used to. It’s also inspiring to see the skill on show from the students and have the opportunity to spend time with them to learn more about their experiences. We wish all the students and staff well for the year ahead and are already looking forward to returning next year.”
NCW is extremely grateful to MCC for their continued support of this highly valued fixture. Events like this not only showcase students’ sporting talents but also play a vital role in promoting inclusivity and accessibility in sport.
And with such a close result, preparations for next year’s match have already begun… we’ll be coming back even stronger!
