Preparing for University (5 day intensive course)

A five day intensive course for young adults who are blind or vision impaired preparing to live away from home for the first time.

Sessions will be delivered by qualified and experience members of NCW staff or other professionals.

All meals are included and will either be prepared as part of the course or taken on campus in the NCW canteen.

The five day and four night residential break will cover:

  • Meal planning, budgeting and supermarket shopping
  • Preparing and cooking meals
  • Kitchen orientation, equipment, food identifying and labelling
  • Access technology for independent living
  • Housework; cleaning, bed-making, recycling, laundry
  • Home maintenance; batteries, light bulbs, fire safety
  • Health; Staying safe, Sex education, self examination, drug and alcohol awareness
  • Self care; hair, make-up, shaving, personal grooming
  • Advocacy; medical appointments, professional support, benefits
  • Q&A session with VI University graduates
  • Self defence session
  • First Aid for Mental Health (accrediated course)
  • Yoga session

 

Accommodation will be in our newly refurbished accomodation with three bay communal kitchen and either single or twin en-suite bedroom.

In the evenings there will be a chance to socialise and relax with others on the course.
