Supporting Futures Through Work Experience at NCW

Dom and Ally standing outside the entrance of an Anytime Fitness gym, leaning against a metal railing in front of the building. Both individuals are wearing dark athletic clothing with the Anytime Fitness logo on the front. Behind them is a brick wall, large glass double doors, and a prominent Anytime Fitness sign in white and purple above the entrance.

At New College Worcester, we are incredibly fortunate to have the support of a wide range of local businesses and organisations who offer our students valuable work experience placements. These opportunities play a vital role in helping young people with vision impairment build confidence, develop skills and explore career pathways in real‑world settings.

Work experience brings a range of benefits for our students, including:

  • Building independence through travel, routines and workplace expectations
  • Developing communication and teamwork skills
  • Gaining practical experience in fields they may wish to pursue
  • Increasing confidence by working alongside new people
  • Exploring future careers in a supportive, hands‑on environment
  • Understanding workplace accessibility and advocating for their needs

One of the many brilliant local companies partnering with NCW is Anytime Fitness in Worcester, which has welcomed student Dom for several shifts each week as part of his ongoing placement.

This partnership has proved to be an outstanding success.

A keen sports enthusiast with a strong interest in personal training, this placement has been the perfect match for Dom. He travels independently by taxi each week and has become fully immersed in the Anytime Fitness team. No task has been too much to ask — he has taken on every opportunity with enthusiasm and determination.

“My confidence has grown so much from being here. I am able to do everything, and I am really enjoying it.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Ally and the team at Anytime Fitness for the support they’ve given Dom. Their willingness to welcome him, guide him and involve him fully in the day to day running of the gym has made a huge difference. Opportunities like this don’t just build skills — they build futures, and we can’t thank them enough.”
