Celebrating 200 Years of Braille with Artwork
In 1824, just 15 years old, Louis Braille invented the Braille code – a tactile reading and writing system. This revolutionary invention transformed the lives of blind and partially sighted people, enabling them to read, write and access information independently. Two hundred years later, Braille is a universal system used in every language by over six million people worldwide, remaining as vital as ever for independence and literacy.
Here at NCW, we have been delighted to join the Vision Impaired community in celebrating 200 years of Braille throughout 2024–25. To mark this remarkable milestone, our students have taken part in a very special creative project: producing a stunning piece of tactile artwork inspired by Braille. Students worked with foam clay to bring their ideas to life, using buttons to represent Braille letters and mounting wooden lettering onto fabric to form individual “dominoes.” The results were imaginative, tactile and full of personality – with outstanding designs ranging from bold, abstract creations to a wonderfully quirky yak!
The project not only celebrates Braille but also gave students the opportunity to explore texture, design and creativity, while reflecting on the importance of accessibility and communication. What a fantastic way to honour 200 years of Braille!
To make further use of the artwork, we are delighted to bring you this calendar in celebration of Braille – Long Live Braille!
“As the words tumbled out of my mouth about the Braille Art project that I had dreamed up in the shower one morning, I wondered whether or not Mrs Kings – our Art teacher – would be able to make any sense of what I was saying, even though I could see the whole thing so clearly in my mind’s eye. But she caught the vision and ran with it, setting the students to create the wonderful piece shown here. Thanks and unreserved admiration go to all the students involved for their imaginative interpretation of an absolutely crazy idea, and thanks go to Mrs Kings, of course, for making the magic happen. Feast your eyes.”
